The Story Behind Raat

Raat is Atif Aslam's 2021 standalone single, composed and sung by him, with music shaped by Saad Sultan and words shared with the late poet Munir Niazi. Aslam told Instep that the song began about seven years earlier as a soft-rock piece, but he discarded that version and later rebuilt it with Sultan. The released recording resists a neat genre label: guitars and modern textures sit beside harmonium while Aslam moves from a hushed address to soaring pleas. Yasir Jaswal directed the nine-minute video as a short film, placing Aslam in several roles alongside Syra Yousuf, Kiran Malik, Mansha Pasha and Gohar Rasheed. Its central idea is simple but elastic. Night holds different fears, memories and possibilities for each person, yet morning still follows.

Meaning & Translation

Raat means "night." Atif Aslam treats it as a companion rather than a clock, someone asked to stay close, conceal flaws, share rain and silence, and keep loneliness away. The opening Punjabi image stretches separation into a long, cold night; the Urdu passages then turn darkness into a space for wandering, dreaming and remembering. The repeated appeal that the night should not become too heavy carries tenderness and unease at once. It can be heard as romantic longing, but the song reaches beyond one lover. Night absorbs fear, solitude and hidden selves, while the expectation of morning leaves a quiet thread of hope.
