The Story Behind Raaja Rani OST

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sings the title track of Raaja Rani, the HUM TV serial that ran from April to September 2025, and the song went up two days before the first episode aired. Raheel Fayyaz composed it and Asad Ali Shah wrote the words. The hook borrows the opening every Urdu bedtime story uses, "ek tha raaja, ek thi rani", then turns it into a "jalti hui kahani", a story that burns rather than ends happily, and that inversion is the whole idea. Sana Zafar's script, directed by Amin Iqbal for BJ Productions and MD Productions, puts Faysal Qureshi and Hina Afridi on opposite sides of a class divide, so the fable framing lands as a warning: the song tells you how the story goes before the serial does.

Meaning & Translation

The title is the plainest thing here: raaja and rani, king and queen, the two figures an Urdu fable always opens with. Asad Ali Shah keeps that nursery framing and then spoils it on purpose. The story he tells is a burning one, a "jalti hui kahani", and his couple are not being crowned but carried, past strangers and unfamiliar streets, toward a destination neither of them chose. The line that carries the weight is a warning the singer gives his own heart: "aey dil sambhal", steady yourself, this road is hard. Taken together, the refrain says something quieter than heartbreak. A love story can keep the shape of a fairy tale and still lose its ending.
