The Story Behind Teriyaan

Released on 1 January 2018, Teriyaan brought Asim Azhar and Aima Baig together for an independent pop duet produced by Qasim Azhar. Asim Azhar and Hassan Ali wrote and composed the song. The pair considered offering it to a film, but chose to release it without a brand association so the focus would remain on the artists. Director Adnan Kandhar translated its conflict between private devotion and public hesitation into a spare, symbolic video built around a phone booth, stage, and table. Azhar said the video was completed in a nine-hour shoot after the song had already been ready for about five months. The arrangement begins as polished heartbreak pop, then gathers intensity toward a qawwali-flavored close, giving the lovers' unresolved exchange a dramatic final lift.

Meaning & Translation

Teriyaan is a Punjabi form of "your," a possessive word that leaves its object unstated. That openness suits a song about a relationship whose deepest commitments are felt privately but not acknowledged in public. The two voices sound like opposite sides of the same hurt: one person has surrendered emotionally, while the other keeps the bond uncertain. Affection therefore turns into pleading, frustration, and the fear of being denied. Rather than offering a neat resolution, the refrain circles that imbalance. The English sense is not simply "I miss you," but "I have made myself yours, yet you still will not openly call me your own."
