The Story Behind Wabaal OST

Wabaal OST is the title song for HUM TV's 2022 serial Wabaal, a drama about Anum's pursuit of luxury and the consequences of choices shaped by greed and usury. Yashal Shahid and Naveed Nashad share the vocals, with Nashad also composing Qamar Nashad's words. Programming by Naqi Ali and Wasif Nashad, with guitar by Mumtaz Hussain (Monty), gives the recurring bandeya refrain a modern soundtrack frame. The song mirrors the series' moral argument, turning desire from a private longing into a warning about pride, restlessness and the cost of wanting more. That caution sits naturally beside Qaisra Hayat's story, directed by Amin Iqbal and led by Sarah Khan and Talha Chahour. Rather than romanticising ambition, the title theme keeps returning to humility and accountability.

Meaning & Translation

Wabaal means a calamity, burden or ruin brought upon oneself. In the song, the word describes what unchecked desire can become. The verses move between Urdu and Punjabi as they caution a person who treats every wish as a command and forgets that human control is limited. Ambition becomes a whirlpool: the more happiness the speaker tries to seize, the more peace slips away. The repeated appeal to bandeya, meaning human being or fellow mortal, pulls the warning close. It asks the listener to set pride aside, recognise God's presence and value blessings already received. The title therefore carries both consequence and counsel: desire becomes wabaal when it overrules humility and gratitude.
